What is Lolita?

Lolita fashion is an alternative fashion style and subculture that appeared in Japan around the 1990’s. Since then it has grown and evolved, spreading worldwide with many dedicated followers. Taking inspiration mainly from Victorian children’s clothing and the ideals of the Rococo art movement, Lolita outfits tend to be very extravagant. Modest, hyper-feminine, and just taking up a lot of space in general, this is a style that sticks out in a crowd. Many Lolita (wearers of this style) have a strong sense of community; we frequent online forums and chat groups to share, learn, and make friends. In many cities, formal and informal gatherings referred to as “Lolita meetups” are held to celebrate the fashion.
